This has been an incredibly hard week in my home town.

Here's why...

And one of my students, a year younger than Braylee in school, wrote a song in her memory, going to try and post it here

She'll make the list this week, being awarded 100 points, 50 for performing and 25 for writing a song and 25 for uploading it to the internet for others to share :)

Earn points all summer long (see list below).

Each Tuesday this summer I will post on www.lorislessons.blogspot.com those participating and their points they’ve earned. You can earn points up until August 6th.

Winners will be announced on the website above on August 7th! 

Award medals will be delivered thereafter to the three highest scorers. Gold, Silver and Bronze!

10 minutes of practice time, adult supervised and timed. (up to 15 points a day awarded)

1 song played or sung from memory, can be previous recital pieces. Must be videoed.

Record you singing or playing the national anthem. 

Record you singing or playing a patriotic song. 

Learn a new song on your own.

Find pianos/guitars/musical things during your travels this summer and send me a picture.

Play for friends or family on July 4th a patriotic song (can be same one as used before)

Complete a music theory worksheet and send it to Ms. Lori or take a picture and email or message it via text message.

Research a composer. Write a paragraph about their lives and music. 

Make up a music game. Send it to me or take a picture.

Design musical tshirt on paper.

Visit a music store.

Call and arrange a visit a nursing home and play the piano, guitar or sing( take your tracks and cd player or ipod speakers) for at least 10 min. Video if possible to verify.

Perform at church or another venue during the summer.

Teach a friend or a sibling or a parent a song on the piano, the new student must play the learned song for me.

I am open to more ideas and will award points as merited, feel free to ask me!

Cherry Berry Singing

With my vocal students this year we are adding an exciting recital. A night unplugged at Cherry Berry in Duncan. The objective is to enjoy a nice evening of uplifting and fun music in a the non threatening coffee house atmosphere. Most songs will be accompanied by guitar. Tentative Date is Feb. 17th at 7 pm but that is subject to change.

I found this article in webmd- a few things I have changed my mind on is early learners, while I've never advocated pre readers to jump into full time lessons I think this study may prove my theory wrong. Still keep in mind pre readers progress slower but the benefits are there for sure!

And what a neat concept that the lessons you are sacrificing for now will benefit them in their senior adult lives!

April Composer- Woody Guthrie

Finally a Guitarist Composer. Can I hear an amen?

I love Woody for several reasons....1. He's an Oklahoman 2. He wrote the songs of a people, a generation in hard times 3. He wasn't wealthy and showy as most modern musicians, he lived simply, he sang because to not sing was just not gonna happen

He was not the best singer.
He smoked, not a healthy choice.
He died young. in his 50's
He wrote ALOT of songs....

February Composer- Scott Joplin

in honor of African American History month-

Scott Joplin- 
born mid century 1800's outside Texarkana (making him the closest composer geographically to us)

was given FREE lessons and took advantage of it

named the father of ragtime

wrote lots of music, mostly played first then put on paper, had a huge hand width, that's why a lot of the orginal music has huge intervals in the left hand

He music is fun and lively and continues to be a favorite among piano students

January Composer- Chopin

Chopin was an interesting man.

He wrote strictly for the piano.

He died early and was buried in Paris but his heart was taken back to Poland, the land of his birth. Literally they sent it back!

November Composer- Haydn

We've been having a lot of fun with these composers.

Mr. Franz Joseph Haydn was quite funny at times. We'll be listening to the Surprise Symphony this month in lessons. It starts piano and has an abrupt forte about 30 seconds into, it was to awaken the sleeping audience he sometimes wrote for. He had the privilege of serving in a castle for royalty on a regular basis.

October Composer- Bach

Welcome back.

We'll get right to it- our composer this month is JS Bach. He was born in Germany in 1685 on March 21st. How old would he be on his birthday?

I thought my guitar students would like this!

September Composer(s) of the Month- Clara Schuman

I will post once a month, the composer we are studying. Very little time in the lessons will be given to this so I encourage you to explore all the links, songs, and games I post here on the web. 

Quick facts about Ms. Schumann 

* her parents were musicians in the early 1800's

* she grew up in Germany and learned from her father, piano and violin

* she began performing at the age of 9, with a full recital all on her own at 11

* she toured playing music all over and outside of Germany
* she fell in love with one of her parent's students Robert Schumann
* she not only cared for her family of 8 but also found time to PRACTICE , perform and teach!
